Serdar “Sam” Guner | Courtesy
“Nothing is ever lost by courtesy. It is the cheapest of the pleasures costs nothing and conveys much. It pleases him who gives and him who receives, and thus, like mercy, it is twice blessed.”
Courtesy is one of the many good traits that Serdar “Sam” Guner is teaching in his taekwondo class. But first, what is courtesy? And secondly, how can you be courteous to one another?
Courtesy is the showing of politeness in one’s attitude and behavior towards others.
But how do Serdar “Sam” Guner teach his students’ courtesy? Let’s find out.
“I told them to greet each other whenever they enter as well as whenever they leave. That is already a simple act of courtesy”, says Serdar “Sam” Guner . One of the fundamental lessons that Sam teaches in his Taekwondo class is simply being humble and modest to everyone. “I also teach them to respect each other regardless of their rank”, Sam adds. Ranks should not be used to intimidate others on your class – you must treat everyone in your class with utmost respect. In connection with starting with simple act of courtesy, Serdar “Sam” Guner urges his students to bowing to their fellow classmates as well as to their teacher. Not only before and after sparring but also whenever they greet each other.
“Many students learn courtesy from me but you know as a teacher, you might as well learn from your students”, Sam thoughtfully says. Respect begets respect. As a teacher, Sam sets as a good example. Every time they end a class session, the students thank him for imparting his knowledge onto them and in return, he thanks them back for taking his lessons seriously. Instead of having the plain old teaching session where the teacher only talks during the class, Serdar “Sam” Guner sees to it that his class is participating in the class by letting his students say what they have in mind.
As a Taekwondo instructor, not only does Serdar “Sam” Guner teach his students about discipline. He also imparts the importance of being courteous to one another; not only in class but as well as outside the class. People who are courteous are the people who find less trouble and conflicts that may come to their path.
Politeness, civility, respect, kindness, being well-mannered – these are just some of the words that can be connected to courtesy. You can gain these traits by starting with something simple – be courteous to everyone and possibly gain the world.

Serdar Guner | Importance of Self-Control
I know we are on the same page when I tell you that when it comes to any sports: taekwondo, basketball, swimming, one of the most important lesson one has to learn and master is self-control. No success can be achieved without proper control over oneself. Serdar Guner stresses this lesson to his students especially when teaching taekwondo Sydney.
Serdar Guner explains Self-control
Self-control is the ability of a person to control his/her emotions, desires, impulses, and behavior. It is being able to resist short term pleasures to give priority to the actions that will help you achieve your long term and more meaningful goals. Proper control can help someone improve in decision making, and will be able to handle pressure that he might encounter. They are also capable with dealing with diverse people no matter how difficult it may seem.
Contrary to some people’s perspective, taekwondo is not a violent and aggressive sport. For a student to excel in the field of martial arts, he has to develop a strong sense of discipline and other values such as respect, humility, and courtesy. These values will help them hone their self control and resist temptations and malicious desires.
Aside from the physical aspect and values, student can also develop their skills in different life aspects: spiritual, mental, and emotional. Serdar Guner ultimately prepares a student for what life might offer.
Self Control is an important train especially if you want to be successful in achieving your goals. Other than self-control, there are other virtues you must learn and improve to help yourself face the challenges that are ahead of you. Some of these virtues include Perseverance and Integrity.
